OUR HISTORY
Promo Salud, previously known as Latino Healthcare Forum (LHCF) is a nonprofit organization that serves primarily the Hispanic/Latino community in Central Texas.
Through our unique combination of community health worker certification, outreach, community health education, medical research studies, advocacy programs, and many other programs, PromoSalud simultaneously eliminates the health barriers that affect Latinos at the local level.
In April 2024, with an eye on the future and reaffirming its commitment to our communities, PromoSalud changed its name to PromoSalud to highlight the name of our signature program.
For 15 years, PromoSalud has been the connection between our community and the healthcare system through the use of the community health worker model, and PromoSalud will continue to break every barrier that keeps Latinos from living a healthy life. As we continue telling our story and writing our future, we will champion our families and communities in their daily struggle to gain the right to health and healthcare.
In 2009, before the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed on March 23, 2010, a group of highly involved community members informally founded the Latino HealthCare Forum (LHCF) in Austin, Texas, which is now PromoSalud. Initially, the main goal of the PromoSalud was to involve the community and provide a platform (forum) to have conversations about the upcoming changes to the healthcare ecosystem, both locally and nationally, and how these changes would impact Latinos.
After having several forums and conversations with the community, it became evident that the PromoSalud would have to become a 501 (c)3 nonprofit to educate the public about the ACA, also known as Obamacare, and its many provisions, such as health insurance, choosing a medical home, electronic health records, and other prevention components stipulated in the law. Thus, intending to bring a clear, culturally and linguistically competent model of outreach and education to the forefront, Michael Candelas, Jill Ramirez, Sam Coronado, and others formally established the Latino HealthCare Forum in 2011 in Austin, Texas. The community health worker (Promotora) model was selected due to its long tradition of bridging the gap between the community and healthcare providers throughout Latin America. The founders have remained an integral part of the organization's success. In 2024, the Forum was renamed PromoSalud to highlight one of the PromoSalud signature training programs.
Ever since its formation, PromoSalud has served and educated communities and groups living along the Eastern Crescent of Austin regarding health, healthcare access, prevention, and treatment through many of its programs and projects, and has advocated for services for the safety net population.
